Thomas Haas is on court

Thomas Haas is currently playing Djokovic on court number one, at Wimbledon.
Haas is sporting-calendar’s tip to win Wimbledon this year.

Why the confidence in the 29th seed?
He has a great serve and an excellent grass game, but most of all, he serves and volleys, which since the days of Borg – Connors – MacEnroe, right up to Edburg, has been the one weapon that gets results on grass.

Wimbledon 2009 – Laura Robson out

Laura Robson knocked out in first round

Laura Robson knocked out in first round

Laura Robson has been knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round, going down in 3 sets, 6-3 4-6 2-6.

Laura is 488 in the world rankings and her opponent was a former world number 5 ranked player and the current world number 32.
In her first appearance in the senior tournament, Laura held her own, smashing her way to a first set win, with some blistering forehands.
Unforced errors and two double faults cost her the second set (and the match).
There is a great deal to be pleased about in her performance, much of last years junior success and today’s experience will serve her well in future competitions.
Laura says the step up to the ladies competition was not that much different from her junior tournament exploits, on her performance today, I have no doubt that Wimbledon is within her reach.

Nadal out of Wimbledon

World number one, Rafael Nadal will not defend his Wimbledon men’s singles crown because of a knee injury.
As the sporting calendar hots up this month, what a way to start!

Wimbledon 2009 will have a new champion, and with Andy Murray in the different half of the draw to Roger Federer, as much as I think Murray will not win a Wimbledon singles title, I can’t help thinking that maybe this year’s going to be his best chance?

Murray is an excellent hard court player, where he can add spin to his shots and force errors from his opponent, but on grass, it’s a harder, faster, game, where the serve and volley players triumph more often than not.
I am not fooled by Nadal’s victory last year, a serve and volley player will beat a power player who stays at the back of the court, around 95% of the time.

But who stands out amongst this years entrants?

Laura Robson given Wimbledon wildcard

Fantastic news for fans of English tennis – as Laura Robson has been given a wildcard for Wimbledon’s ladies competition for 2009!
I watched Laura triumph in last years girl’s competition, against all the odds.
Wimbledon organisers have used a special clause to give Laura the wildcard, despite her world ranking being below the top 250 cut off limit.
Good luck lass.. you can do it!
